Stoffer Eliminated in Opening Round of Midwest Nationals - 5/4/2009

Karen Stoffer and her GEICO Powersports team battled on-and-off rain showers en route to a solid No. 8 qualifying effort at the NHRA O'Reilly Midwest Nationals from St. Louis, Mo., May 1-3.

Stoffer's quickest run of qualifying came in session No. 1 where she ran 6.98 at 189 mph.

"This really is a great bike we have," Stoffer said of her Suzuki which was built over the off-season. "I thought my old one was easy to ride. This new one is the smoothest ever."

Stoffer improved to a 6.96 at 191 mph during Sunday's opening round of eliminations, but was unable to get the victory after committing a -.016 foul start.

Stoffer leaves St. Louis ranked eighth in the Full Throttle Series with 175 points.

Next up for Stoffer is the United Association Route 66 NHRA Nationals from Chicago, Ill., June 4-7.

"We have some time off before the next race so we are going to freshen everything up," Stoffer said. "I'm excited to get back on track and back to the winner's circle really soon. We are close."

In round No. 2 Stoffer slowed to a 7.03 and was defeated by Doug Horne's 6.95.

For Stoffer the weekend in Atlanta included a ton of excitement off the track as well.

Stoffer threw out the first pitch at the Atlanta Braves April 16th game at Turner Field.

"That was a lot of fun. It was an action-packed exciting weekend," Stoffer said.

Also Stoffer witnessed the national television debut of the new GEICO Powersports commercial, which features Stoffer and teammate Top Fuel Dragster racer Morgan Lucas.

"We filmed it back in Valdosta in March and I couldn't wait to see the final result," Stoffer said. "We ended up pulling an all-nighter so they could get some really cool shots in the dark

Stoffer went on to extend special thanks to all of the 2009 sponsors and supporters.
