HOUSTON (April 28) – Karen Stoffer had her best qualifying effort of the season aboard the GEICO Suzuki Saturday, qualifying No. 6 in Pro Stock Motorcycle at the O'Reilly Auto Parts NHRA Spring Nationals at Royal Purple Raceway.
"We are the quickest Suzuki on the timing sheet, so that's something to be proud of," Stoffer said. "We're nowhere near the V motors -- they're in a whole different world right now -- but we're in the field so we have a chance to win.
"Qualifying in the top half of the field is another huge feat. I think LE (Tonglet) was the next quickest Suzuki and he's 10th so we're pleased. Most of the weekend, we've been the best Suzuki and that's important for us."
Stoffer's best pass of the weekend was a 6.908 at 194.63 mph. Stoffer said she was confident coming to Texas because her crew chief/husband Gary Stoffer normally has a solid handle on the Houston track.
"Gary usually has a good tune-up for this track," Stoffer said. "It's always been a fairly decent place for us. We went to the wall a little bit in that last session and I clicked it off early because I knew we were in and I didn't want to push our luck. Aside from that, this race has been good also.
"I don't like ending qualifying like that but I have confidence in the bike for tomorrow."
She will race No. 11 Chip Ellis in the first round. He went 6.973 seconds at 192.93 mph in his best qualifying effort. Stoffer said she hopes everything holds together for a deep run into Sunday's eliminations.
"We are running with just one motor for at least two more races so we have to nurse it along and keep it healthy," she said. "We'll still race everyone to the best of our abilities."
Eliminations for the O'Reilly Auto Parts NHRA Spring Nationals presented by Super Start Batteries get under way at 11 a.m. CDT from Baytown, Texas.
Stoffer went on to extend special thanks to all
of the 2012 sponsors and supporters.
