BRAINERD, Minn. (Aug. 18) - GEICO Suzuki rider Karen Stoffer's lucky number appears to be five, but she hopes to ride that all the way to No. 1 in Sunday's Lucas Oil NHRA Nationals at Brainerd International Raceway.
Stoffer, fifth in the Pro Stock Motorcycle points standings, qualified fifth in Brainerd and was fifth in three of the four qualifying sessions.
"That's the best we can do, No. 5," Stoffer said. "We were fifth almost every single pass, we came into the race fifth, we're sitting fifth. Five is the number, but I hope that's not the number for tomorrow."
Stoffer begins the hunt for No. 1 Sunday against No. 12 qualifier Jim Underdahl. Her best pass was 6.918 seconds at 192.30 mph, while Underdahl's top run was 6.981 at 192.25 mph.
"The Suzuki's running good," Stoffer said. "She's one of the better Suzukis out here, and she's doing well. We had some good passes out there, so I'm looking forward to tomorrow."
But she's not exactly looking forward to racing her teammate Underdahl.
"I'm going to go back to our crew and tell them they didn't plan things very well," Stoffer said. "This is his home track and he definitely has a lot of good mojo here. It's going to be a tough race. He's a great racer, and they're a great team. I know what they have underneath them and what they're capable of.
"This is going to be a tough race. I've got to get in the Countdown, and he wants to do well at his home track. I don't want to have to get in the Countdown at the next race; I'd like to do it here."
Stoffer can clinch a spot in the Countdown to the Championship - NHRA's version of the playoffs - by advancing to the semifinals or by going one round further than Steve Johnson.
"We've got a good bike, and we're doing the best we can with what we have," Stoffer said. "We're going to race tomorrow, and it's going to be a good race either way, I know that."
Stoffer went on to extend special thanks to all
of the 2012 sponsors and supporters.
